A Study Trip to commemorate the 38th World Forestry Day was conducted for the students and faculty of College of Teachers’ Education at Reiek Tourist Resort and its surrounding areas on 20th March 2009. The theme of this year’s World Forestry Day was “Biodiversity and Climate Change.” To create environmental awareness and love for the natural resources as well as to combat climate change, the students exercised Nature Study/Observation of this area. The importance of Forests and Forestry sources is to be focused as source of water, food, shelter and employment, for all sections of the society.

Observation of Earth Day 2009 was organized at 15 different places in collaboration with NGOs like Young Mizo Association (YMA), Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl (MHIP), Mizoram Upa Pawl (MUP), Eco-clubs of different institutions within Aizawl city wherein the volunteers carried out cleaning of public places, water points, drainages etc. The message of Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Shri. Dr. Garbyal has been read out to these volunteers.

            Posters and Banners inspire attentiveness and admiration for the Earth’s surroundings were displayed at different places. Besides, Press Release for Earth Day 2009 has been issued through Govt. Press Release. The Radio Talk of Pi Lalrammawii Sailo, Divisional Forest Officer, Forest Extension Division was broadcasted through All India Radio, Aizawl.

On 22nd May 2009, International Biodiversity Day was commemorated at Champhai Community Hall wherein the Hon’ble Minister of Env. & Forests Deptt. was the Chief Guest expressed the necessity of maintaining proper Safety Reserve Forests by every villages. “Biodiversity and Invasive Alien Species” is the theme chosen for this year.

On-the-Spot Essay Writing for the students of High School and Higher Secondary School was organized to commemorate the 37th World Environment Day 2009. The topic chosen was “What I want my parents to do to protect and improve our environment” the following are the winners:

            The topic chosen by UNEP for this year’s World Environment Day is “Your Planet Needs You, UNite to Combat Climate Change”. The message of the Hon’ble Minister for Environment & Forests Deptt. was broadcasted through All India Radio and Doordarshan Kendra, Aizawl. Besides, Painting Exhibition was organized in collaboration with Mizoram Academy of Fine Arts (MAFA) at Vanapa Hall. The main function was held at Agriculture Conference Hall, Aizawl wherein the Hon’ble Minister for Environment & Forests Deptt. was the Chief Guest.

Green Mizoram 2009 was inaugurated at State Referral Hospital Complex at Falkawn Village by Hon’ble Chief Minister Pu Lal Thanhawla. Ministers, MPs, Speaker of the Mizoram Assembly, Parliamentary Secretaries, MLAs and Officials of State Government took part in the event. On this occasion, awards for the prevention of Fire was gave away by the Hon’ble Chief Minister. The following are the recipients in different categories:
